Well this morning turned out better than the last few. I fell asleep around 10:45 last night, as I was pretty wiped, and while I initially woke up around 3 am, I managed to go back to sleep and stay asleep to around 6 am. I am not sure how well I slept, but obviously I staid in bed for 3 more hours. Around 6:45 am I got up and went walking, same area of the Manoa Valley, but I went a bit further this morning. Unhappily, the four pictures I took this morning did not come out very well, so I will have to do so another morning.
Today's lecture was on Vedic philosophy and was intriguing and thought provoking. The institute provided lunch today-India chicken curry, rice, lentils, curried vegetables, nan and some sort of soup that was pretty good. This is the last of the meals they will provided for a couple weeks. After lunch we had a talk about the history of Hawaii, kind of a quick overview. Lisa and I then decided to head back to our rooms to change, and we then headed out around 2 to the National War Cemetery of the Pacific in the Punchbowl, an extent volcano. I have some pictures from the expedition. I sort of screwed up on the bus ride, so Lisa and I had to walk for about 30 minutes, up hill (and I mean one steep ass hill) until we got to the cemetery. We did meet two young girls who were also lost, and led them to the cemetery. My iPhone GPS came in wonderfully. We spent about an hour at the cemetery, finding the graves of Ernie Pyle, those of the Wake Island dead, and the first grave of the Unknown Dead from Pearl Harbor. I'll look for the grave of one of the Iwo Jima flag raisers. There was also a funeral going on in the cemetery, though I only heard taps and the departing military detail after the ceremony was over with. Lisa also found a camera shot or two whose pictures will make up her next book cover.
We came back home on one of the wildest bus rides down the mountain, transferred to the bus that took us back to campus, and then decided to take some time before heading to dinner around 7 here (1 in the morning for you East Coasters.) Tomorrow is a session in the morning on Buddhism and a movie in the evening, but Lisa has been begging to go to the beach. So I think inbetween we are going to head down to Waikiki. She is going to the beach, and I am going to the US Army museum, then meet up with her before heading back to the dorms and the movie. I'll let you know how that all goes. I have been slightly sunburned already, so I have been slathering on the sunscreen before heading out each afternoon.
Look for pictures today. Hope you folks are enjoying these posts.
