Happy Fourth of July weekend to everyone!
Not much to update but only a week left to go until I reach Hawaii. I have so much to do this week and I will need most of the week to catch up and end the school semester properly. That means tons of grading on Wednesday and Thursday, laundry and packing on Friday, and then off to the airport next Saturday, leaving Melbourne around 8:30 to make the 11:30 flight without any problems. Luckily my housemate will drive me out to the airport and my car back home for the duration of my trip. Coming back might be a bit more difficult given that my flight arrives at 3:25 in the afternoon, so I might be renting a car for the return journey and the dropping it off the next day at Melbourne airport. I have done it before and its not that much of a hassle.
Lots to do but I also got a guidebook that has the top 10 things to do in Honolulu. It's a bit of an overlap with my other Hawaii guidebook, but there are enough differences to make taking the top 10 book in my carry on luggage. I'll need to try out some of restaurants they suggest (especially the cheaper ones). I have also been thinking about renting a car for one of the weekend to explore the rest of Oahu, but car rentals are pretty expensive: about $50 bucks a day for a compact, once the fees and taxes are all in place. But if I split the cost with my colleague, Dr. Perdigao, it shouldn't be too bad.
Anyway, work beckons. I'll have a few more updates before I go, and one certainly next Sunday after I have settled in and gotten some sleep. The biggest question this week has been: are you excited to go? Honestly, I have been too busy with a variety of projects the past two weeks to even really think about the workshop. I have some reading I need to do as well, but I am trying to find the time to fit that into a packed week.
Ask me again at the end of the week if I am excited...
