Well I am experiencing what only can be considered an odd state of time related fugue. On one hand, it feels like I have been here for days, with things rushing ahead a great deal, and on the other hand, when I really think about it, I realize this is only my second full day in Hawaii. Maybe it is the lack of sleep, and the odd sleep schedule (last night was better, tonight I hope will be even better) and the environment, but I am hoping that this feeling disappears sooner than later.
Today was the first day of the Infusing South Asian Studies Institute. We had our first instructor this morning talking about the cultural and social divide that comes from trying to define what South Asia actually means. It was also a philosophical discussion about Buddhism and Hinduism, and it will lead to tomorrow morning's lecture about Vedic philosophy in India. It should be interesting to say the least. I learned more than a few things I did not know, and some of the philosophical ideas are intriguing. Tomorrow is a lecture in the morning and then a hosted lunch (which was similar to today's schedule). Wednesday is morning lecture and movie at night, Thursday is an all day 9-4:30 series of lectures, and Friday we are done at noon. We talked about projects we need to get done before the course ends, so it wasn't as bad as I feared, but it will still take some thought.
After the institute, we went to get ID cards (good only to 7/30) but it also led to the first argument Lisa and I had. Well it was more of an over reaction and misunderstand on her behalf, and she stormed off. I actually didn't do anything other than offer to give her some time to deal with a problem that had come up, and she took that as me being impatient to do something. Sometimes insight into another person's behavior backfires. So she stormed off, I walked to the bookstore on campus, and then about an hour later we got back together when things had calmed down, and we wandered about campus, with me taking pictures of different places on campus. We never got to the cemetery, but we will try tomorrow I am sure since we will have more time in the afternoon.
In the evening, and just a little while ago from my perspective, we went out to dinner, exploring the supermarket area and discovering an whole section of shops and stores we did not know existed from our cursory glance. We ate a small Ramen place, a sort of mom and pop shop, but it wasn't Lisa's cup of tea, though my food was fine. Turns out she dislikes soup, so that was an issue. We then went and got gelato, before walking the mile and a half back to campus. Now I am settling down this evening, getting ready to figure out what to do about staying up until 10 at least and preferably 11 before calling it a night.
