I spent the day yesterday working in my flat until Lisa came back from the beach, then we went to dinner in a small Greek restaurant. The food was good, basic, and I enjoyed dinner. We then began our trek back to the university to what is becoming a nightly tradition: Yogurtland. It is a serve yourself yogurt shop with three dozen toppings, about a dozen different flavors, and you pay based on weight. It makes Lisa happy, it is good dessert, so I put up with it almost every day.
Today, we had class in the morning, and this afternoon, Lisa and I decided to go for lunch and then I convinced her to go to the top of Diamond Head, in return for heading to the beach. While lunch was at a Waikiki lunch spot, I promised Lisa I would then head to the beach with her for a while. I had this Loco Moco breakfast served all day: two eggs, a hamburger, onion gravy over white rice. It was oddly disgusting looking, but tasted quite good. We then walked around the zoo, and up to the entrance to Diamond Head state park. We paid our dollar entrance fee, then grabbed a bottle of iced water, then climbed to the observation deck. Okay, it nearly killed me: more than a 1000 feet up on the edge of the extinct volcano, climbing 99 steps at a 35 degree angle at one point, then 66 circular stairs, then climb out through the concrete gun port of an observation bunker up onto the deck at the top of the summit. It was...brutal: hot, sunny, tough climb (and Lisa does triathlons and she was even complaining) and it took over an hour to make the climb to the top. Then 45 minutes back to the bus stop. By the time we got back to Waikiki it was 5 pm, so I promised Lisa that tomorrow we would go to the beach.
Since neither of us was ready to go back to our residence, we decided to head to the Moana Surfrider hotel and have some drinks. I had a few beers, including one of the gayest looking Hefenweizer (as a joke they piled on the fruit, see the pics) and relaxed for about 90 minutes. I then went by the Apple store to pick up a back up external drive, while Lisa dragged me to do some shopping at Macy's. She ultimately didn't buy anything. We then headed back through a small market looking for souvenirs for a colleague, eventually finding a statue of the Hindu god Ganesh. We bargained for the statue from $48 to $25 and took it back to the dorm after a brief stop at Yogurtland. I have the statue in my room, and I am wondering whether I want to keep it or not. We shall see.
Tomorrow is likely class, then the beach and the bar, before watching a movie in the evening. I also have to do laundry on Wednesday, but that should be okay. We will try to go to Iolani Palace on Thursday. We have a car for the weekend, so we will travel around the island in addition to picking up Lisa's boyfriend Graham on Saturday afternoon.
I'll keep you informed as more things happen, though this may be a busy week without a lot of sight seeing before the weekend.
Email is always welcome. I am feeling a bit disconnected from friends and family, especially with the six hour time difference working against me.
