Saturday night 7/31

Well I just got back from a last night out with Graham and Lisa. They are leaving tomorrow night for Florida, but I will be busy until about 8pm tomorrow night with the 1st day of the Legacies of the Pacific War workshop. It's a busy day: brunch, Pearl Harbor tour, bus tour of USS Utah, Oklahoma and Missouri memorials, the Pacific Aviation Museum, the USS Missouri, and the USS Arizona Memorial and film, a cocktail reception and a formal welcome dinner. Starts at 10, ends around 8. Monday is the formal orientation and the first day of panels, running from 8:30 until 5. So a long first two days. I believe we are back on the bus again on Tuesday.

This morning involved packing up everything and moving to Frear Hall, the newest hall on campus. I will have pictures for you tomorrow, but my room is...small would be an understatement. I would say its about half the space I had in Lincoln Hall, and with a shared bathroom for my three suite mates. We all have separate bedrooms, but we share a bath and a shower. At least they are in separate rooms. It's going to be a long week...especially on Monday when everyone is jockeying for bathroom time.

After moving out of Lincoln Hall, the three amigos went to the post office and then in search for breakfast, eventually it turned into brunch at a Denny's in Waikiki. I then left Graham and Lisa to their own devices as I went to Sears to get a new belt (the loops on my previous belt broke and it wasn't working), then to Barnes and Noble in the Ala Moana Center, before heading to a Borders to see what they had. Eventually I came back on campus, met briefly up with Graham and Lisa, then transferred my belongings to Frear Hall. It was a bit of a shock, but I have been in worse places. The biggest absence is not the lack of a tv, but the lack of mini frig which means I am going to have to be creative in getting drinks.

We all got together for a final dinner at the Moana Surfrider hotel restaurant where Graham and Lisa were spending their last night. The menu was ala carte and expensive, and I mean expensive, but it was the one massive financial splurge I have done. I chose the chef's sampler menu for $90 which included an appetizer, main course and dessert. I have pictures of all but the dessert when it was too dark for my iPhone to take pictures. However, Lisa has them, and when I get them from her, I will post them. We then had a few more drinks, before I left them around 10:15 or so. Went in search of sunglasses, since I left my previous pair behind at the house we were in last night, then waited for the bus.

That was intriguing. Waiting for the bus on a Saturday night in Waikiki, while sailors were wandering the streets in large numbers, meant getting hit on twice by prostitutes looking for business. One of them was really hot, the other was so-so. I just laughed and wandered off to the bus stop. I thought I had missed the last bus, but due to the amount of traffic and the light rain, it was running 30 minutes late. It took me back close to my dorm, and I walked the 1/4 mile or so to Frear Hall from University St.

I will post pictures tomorrow. It's getting late, I am going to try to exercise in the morning, and then grab a shower and make down for breakfast. It is going to be a long, but I think much more interesting week. I leave a week from tomorrow (Sunday 8/8) and then arrive back in Florida around 4 pm on Monday. Then it's back to school again on the 10th. No real adjustment time, so it is going to be a bit brutal on Monday.

Anyway, that's it for now.
