Friday, 6/25

Yesterday I got the schedule for the NEH Pacific workshop and it is going to keep me plenty busy from the looks of it. I am not going to copy over the whole thing, but here are some of the highlights:

Saturday, 7/31: arrival. For me that just simply means transferring from one residence hall to another, a rather short walk.

Sunday, 8/1: Brunch, Pearl Harbor visits: USS Utah, Oklahoma and Missouri memorials, Pacific Aviation Museum, USS Arizona Memorial tour after lunch, formal dinner and reception in the evening

Note, while formal dinner is scheduled, everything we have been sent says that shorts and casual wear (I take it dressy shorts and polo shirts will do) are the expected attire and to leave suits, etc. at home. My question is: do I bring at least one tie? Hmmm...

Monday, 8/2: Panel on resources for research available, Hiroshima workshop, Lunch, panel in afternoon with Pearl Harbor veterans, panel with civilian survivors of the internment camps, Hiroshima, and the battles on Kwajalein Island

Tuesday, 8/3: Fort deRussy Army Museum tour, National War Cemetery of the Pacific tour, Lunch with Pacific War survivors at Hickham Field, tour of Hickham field, dinner free then optional movie in the evening with discussion. I'll probably attend this since I am teaching courses on film and WWII in the Pacific so it seems kinda essential.

Wednesday 8/4: Pacific War and the Hawaiian islands series of panels, after lunch, panels on the Pacific War as seen in Japan and on Pacific islands in modern memory

Thursday, 8/5: Morning session is on Pacific war in modern Japanese history, and the Tokyo war crime trials, afternoon is free for research

Friday, 8/6: Research discussions, and then short presentations on any research already done, and then workshop concludes at 3:30. I am guessing there will be some form of informal dinner that last night out in Honolulu since that tends to be a bit of a tradition at these sort of things.

Saturday, 8/7: Check out and my moving to my last accommodation for one night. Then I have the day free, so I will probably do all the souvenir shopping I want, and figure out what I am going to do with my day on Sunday before a 10pm flight home Sunday evening. I certainly don't want to hang out at the airport all day.

So, just a small hint of what the schedule is like for the second conference. I'll let you know more when these events happen, and I will certainly post as many pictures as I can. Which means getting a better camera than my iPhone or the 6 year old digital camera I have at home which eats batteries like crazy (as I found out in the summers I was at Oxford.)
